When life looks fine on the outside… but doesn’t feel that way inside

Many women I speak to say something similar.

From the outside, life looks normal.

You’re capable.
Responsible.
Holding everything together.

But internally something feels different.

You might notice:

  • Your mind rarely switches off

  • You feel wired even when you’re exhausted

  • Your patience is shorter than it used to be

  • Your sleep feels lighter or more disrupted

  • You struggle to fully relax — even on holiday

  • Small things suddenly feel overwhelming

  • Your body feels tense without you even noticing

Many women I speak to say something similar.

From the outside, life looks normal.

You’re capable.
Responsible.
Holding everything together.

But internally something feels different.

You may have quietly wondered:

“Why can’t I cope like I used to?”

This isn’t weakness.

And it’s not because you’re doing life badly.

Often, it’s a sign that the nervous system has been operating in survival mode for longer than it should.

The nervous system was never designed for constant pressure

Your nervous system is built to protect you.

When pressure appears, your body activates the fight-or-flight response to help you respond quickly and stay safe.

This system works beautifully in short bursts.

But modern life often keeps this system activated for months — sometimes years.

  • Mental load

  • Work pressure

  • Family responsibilities

  • Constant notifications

  • Sleep disruption

  • Emotional strain

If that sounds familiar, you’re very welcome here.

Over time, the nervous system can become chronically activated.

When that happens, your body may struggle to fully return to a calm baseline.

And that constant activation can begin to affect:

  • Sleep

  • Patience

  • Energy levels

  • Emotional resilience

  • Concentration

  • Physical health

Understanding this physiology can be incredibly relieving.

Because it explains why pushing harder rarely fixes the problem.

Pause for a moment

Take a slow breath.

As you read this page, you might already be recognising parts of your own experience.

You may have been pushing through exhaustion, telling yourself you just need to be stronger, more organised, or more disciplined.

But if your nervous system has been in survival mode for a long time, pushing harder usually makes things worse — not better.

Understanding what your body has been doing to protect you can be the first step towards feeling calmer again.

Why I created this guide

Last year I began to recognise that my own nervous system had been stuck in survival mode for much longer than I realised.

Like many women, I was still functioning.

But underneath that functioning was:

  • Constant mental load

  • Poor sleep

  • Irritability

  • Pressure

and a body that rarely felt fully relaxed.

As I began researching the physiology behind chronic stress responses, something became very clear.

This experience is far more common than many women realise.

Through my work as a health coach and women’s wellbeing advocate, I see many women trying to push through exhaustion, anxiety, and overwhelm without understanding what is happening inside their body.

So I began bringing together insights from:

  • Stress physiology

  • Neuroscience

  • Behavioural psychology

  • Nervous system regulation research

alongside my own lived experience.

This guide is the result.

Not a quick fix.

But a clear, compassionate starting point for understanding and gently shifting your nervous system out of survival mode.

What you’ll learn inside the guide

Breaking Free from Fight or Flight explains:

Why “just relaxing” rarely works

And why the nervous system needs specific conditions to feel safe again.

The two common levels of fight-or-flight

Including the high-functioning version many women experience.

Why burnout, anxiety and irritability often overlap

And how they relate to nervous system activation.

The physiological cycle that keeps people stuck

And how to gently interrupt it.

What nervous system recalibration actually looks like

In everyday life — not unrealistic wellness routines.

FAQs

As our society becomes more health-conscious, the demand for Health Coaches increases. But what is a Health Coach? And what types of capacity can you work with them?

Are you a qualified Health Coach?2022-12-13T19:51:26+00:00

Yes indeed! I thought it would be important to get a stamp of approval so I studied to become a Health Coach at the prestigious College of Naturopathic medicine.

Can I work with you on an ad hoc basis?2022-12-13T20:41:35+00:00

Yes of course – I am here for you! Although there are some benefits from working together regulary but that is completely your choice and option. I am sure you will know when you could benefit from regular coaching or a programme. If not, just get in touch and we can have a chat about it.

Once you have had your initial consultation you can book in at your convenience.

Do you diagnose problems and illnesses?2022-12-13T20:08:49+00:00

No I cannot. If I feel like you need a formal diagnosis I will refer you to your GP. If you present with any ‘red flags’ I will also suggest you make an appointment with your GP. On rare occasions I will contact your GP directly if I have any major concerns regarding your health and welleing.

Where are you based and can I work with you remotely?2022-12-13T20:20:50+00:00

I am based between Bristol and Bath in South West England but can provide in person workshops and kitchen detox’s nationally (additional charges may apply for travel). I am also available to coach and lead workshops online. Please get in touch if you require any additional information.

What am I expected to do and change?2022-12-13T20:40:09+00:00

Well that depends on you! We will go through your health history during your initial consultant and then co-create a realistic and sustainable plan for you then. There’s no point making unattainable goals which make you feel like you aren’t achieving.

If your question(s) haven’t been answered, please complete the contact form above or send me an email and I will get back to you shorty.
